2How to Shoot HDV overated  Apr 08, 2008
for a small soft cover book the price was way to high,I tried to get it from my library as I had already read many other books three times the size which according to the price marked on the back were less, however it gave a little idea of what I was up against,I would not recommend it for the price,if it cost $10 or less it would be OK.

5Very helpful to avoid common mistakes with the HDV format  Jan 01, 2008
I've read another book about HDV but this one was much better - it's written in plain english, it's easy to understand and follow, and it has helped me avoid a lot of the mistakes that other members of my film club have made with the format.

There's no fluff or filler, it's all great content, which I really appreciated. I hate books that beat around the bush, using 20 words when one will suffice. Mr Lock gets straight to the point, and the information you need is easy to find as a result. After reading this book you'll be better educated about HDV than 90% of semi-professionals.

I particularly enjoyed the section on how to get the film look, as well as the chapter on outputting hdv to DVD for distribution. A number of questions that I had that no one was able to answer in public forums were covered in depth and very helpfully in this book, so I was very impressed about that.

4Good, but could have been better.  May 14, 2007
I'm reading broadcasting at uni at the mo and come from a photographic background so i know a fair bit about cameras, lighting etc.

This book was GOOD to read and i did learn a lot but i'm not really sure who it was aimed at. One one page it's defining frame rates then on the other it's talking about high deff outputs and voltages.

It's written in a casual style which makes it enjoyable to read and easy to understand. The part about the film look is really good and has been a must read by a number of my friends.

Not sounding big headed but you must remember that i'm training to become a broudcaster so a book that adds to the knowledge i have been taught must be good.

If i was looking for a book that helped me to understand HDV and the pros and cons of HD and HDV then this is it. I ordered mine from the states as it was cheaper and quicker to be delivered than in the UK.

5Excellent Book on HDV  Jun 13, 2006
I read this book in three days and came to a simple conclusion - What a brilliant book! This book is simple to understand and gets to the point. I was amazed how simple HDV technology is when you take away all the marketing hype. The author explains the pros and cons and provides many practical suggestions. I recommend this book to anyone serious about HDV. That's why I gave it full marks. If only other books were written like this.

5An excellent book with information you can use  Apr 12, 2006
I've produced a couple of training videos for the Sony Z1U/FX1 and HC1 called "HandsOnHDV" by VortexMedia.com, and I think this book is the perfect companion to our DVDs. Mr. Lock has written a short, easy to understand book that cuts through all the irrelevant technical details and gets down to explaining what you really need to know about usig HDV in the real world. That's what counts! In my opinion, it's worth far more than the cover price and I highly recommend it to anyone who is getting into HDV -- or thinks they already understand it.
